Monkey Match: A Fun and Educational App for Pre-Readers

Monkey Match, developed by WGBH Interactive, is an engaging iPhone app designed to help pre-readers practice important literacy skills. Based on the Emmy award-winning literacy program Between the Lions on PBS Kids, Monkey Match offers a fun and interactive way for children to learn the identification of letters, beginning sounds of words, and rhymes.

The app features three different games that target specific skills. In the "Upper- and Lowercase Letters" game, players match uppercase letters to their lowercase counterparts, reinforcing letter recognition. The names of the letters are spoken aloud, providing auditory reinforcement.

In the "Beginning Sounds" game, players match pictures of words to their corresponding beginning sounds. For example, they would match the picture of a moon to the sound "mmm." The sounds of the letters are spoken, along with the words themselves, further enhancing phonemic awareness.

The "Rhymes" game focuses on developing rhyming skills. Players match pictures of words to other words that rhyme. For example, they would match the picture of a moon to the word "spoon." All words are spoken aloud, helping children make connections between sounds and rhyming words.
